Motherhood Redefined
Motherhood
Motherhood
What does motherhood really mean? Have you ever sat down and pondered this? The dictionary states motherhood as “noun. the state of being a mother; maternity” Somehow this feel so empty. We have been sold so many ideas, but is this what motherhood really mean at its essence? I remember so clearly when I fell pregnant the first time, I read every book on pregnancy, mothering, babies and what to expect. I felt so prepared and had the most beautiful vision of motherhood burning in me. Yet when my son arrived, these ideas quickly came falling. Not one of the books I read was written for him, and none of them prepared me for the emotional and spiritual journey I would embark on. I remember sitting, often crying through long nights, and thinking, this is not what I signed up for. And little did I know God was inviting me into something so much bigger.
Now many years later, I am a different place, yet many of it the same. But instead of endless researching, I am now only sitting with the one who knows us so intimately. Hearing what He has to say about all this. Every season with our kids is different, yet I firmly believe the bigger purpose is not the different seasons, the daily mundane or the high expectations placed on mothers. It is a molding, shaping, and creating of living souls…
Motherhood is the one time in our lives when we partner with God in something so much bigger than ourselves.
I have come to believe motherhood is a sacred journey. One that allows us to become more entwined with God than what most other experiences in life offer. Dare I say, even marriage. Motherhood is the one time in our lives when we partner with God in something so much bigger than ourselves. He gave us these persons – made in His image – to help become and grow into a likeness of Him unlike anything the world has ever seen.
And once I realized this, it dawned on me, not only is this journey, this partnership so significant and unlike anything else I will ever do, it is also an exceptional privilege. God chose me to partner with Him, alongside him. And He invites me to look into the future with Him. He asks me to co-create. We have first-hand access to His immense joy over our children as we guide them into a future completely unknown, yet fully known by Him. And He chose us. For such a time as this. He knew with our hearts entwined to His, not only will this journey be one of becoming, but it is also the highest form of trust and love anyone can ask of us.
We have first-hand access to His immense joy over our children as we guide them into a future completely unknown, yet fully known by Him.
This changed everything. We are not to look at what the world tells us. We are not to meet other’s expectations and standards, we are to have our hearts molded by him, and become so intimately acquainted with His heart for our kids that we allow our thoughts to be one with His. We are to abide, rest, wait, dance, sing and create with Him something the world has never seen before. And in the process, we will not just raise our kids for His glory, but our lives will speak of His immensity as well. Our motherhood will become a worship, an offering while we are helping to shape the precious hearts of our children….
